Holiday Maths Ideas

100 square game

Just like children regress with their reading, the same happens with maths too. Let’s look at some holiday maths ideas.

What you will learn:

  • Every day activities to include maths
  • Games to play to maintain maths skills

Holiday Maths Activities

There are many activities around then home which can include lots of maths.

Cooking provides multiple opportunities for maths learning.

Through cooking you can develop comparative language; which is more, less, heavier, lighter.

Converting units oz, lb, g, kg – use an app to help if needed.

Practical measuring and weighing of ingredients, particuarly using the zero function on scales.

There are also opportunities to include time by measuring how long the cooking will take: what will the time be in 20 minutes?

Holiday Maths Games

There are many games you can play with your children to develop their maths in a fun way depending on their age. I really like Monopoly as there are so many opportunites to develop maths. I have created a modified, simplified version at Tutor Dude for children not ready for the full game. You can use a calculator to help support their maths.

There are many strategy games you can also play to develop problem solving skills.

On the road you can play games spotting numbers you see. Who can be the first to find all numbers on a 100 square?

I hope this has been useful. Watch out for further ideas to help your child  from www.TutorDude.com.au
