ELF Module 9 – Circus

ELF Module 9 – Circus

Module 9 is themed circus. The learning focus is on learning the short vowel sounds.

The short vowels are:

a as in apple

e as in egg

i as in insect

o as in orange

u as in umbrella

There are a number of different songs to teach the vowel sounds.

Learning Activities

  1. Following instructions – this week we do another listen and draw task from Muffalo Potato.
  2. Introducing vowels –  students learn about how their mouths change for each vowel sound by looking in a mirror. Due to the way vowel sounds are pronounced it is much harder for the students to feel and hear the differences so looking allows them to see how their lips and cheeks look for each sound.
  3. Following instructions – students complete a circus themed picture by adding extra items as per the instructions.
  4. Vowels – students segment words by jumping in hoops, as they have done before, and identify the vowel sound in the word.
  5. Vowels – students play a board game where they read words with different vowels in the middle.
  6. Handwriting – students use the sight word focus for the week to practice letter formation and positioning on the lines.
  7. Language development – teachers read books to the students and discuss the content using Blanks Questions as a basis to extend language and vocabulary. Training in Blanks Questions is available at Blanks Questions Training
  8. Write their first name and surname, if still required.
  9. Sight words – students are exposed to and play games focusing on the Purple words from Magic Words
