ELF Module 3 – Long and Short

ELF Module 3 continues to build on the students phonological awareness skills.

Learning Activities

  1. Following directions. Students follow simple 3 step instructions where the third instruction is the same as the first. e.g. clap, turn around, clap. Students are encouraged to attend to the instructions before carrying out the movement.
  2. Cutting task – this involves cutting out words along the lines and matching words that start the same by looking at the letters.
  3. Initial sounds – students play a game which involves listening to and identifying the first sound in a word e.g sun starts with the sound /s/ (letter names are not used at this stage).
  4. Matching 2 pictures with the same initial sounds.
  5. Handwriting – open mouth starts or clever c letters – a c d g q o p.  We identify head, tail and body parts of letters. Students also identify words beginning with the letter sounds and write whole words into their books placing them correctly on the red and blue lines.
  6. Alphabet – say the alphabet in order, be aware of l m n o p clarity. Students also identify vowel and consonant letters.
  7. Language development – teachers read books to the students and discuss the content using Blanks Questions as a basis to extend language and vocabulary. Training in Blanks Questions is available at Blanks Questions Training
  8. Following instructions – students work in pairs giving instructions to dress a toy bear.
  9. Write their name. The students initially trace the letter and learn where to place the letters on the red and blue lines. For many  students they have not been exposed to red and blue lines in Prep so this is a good introduction and will be built on in later sessions.
  10. Sight words – students are exposed to and play games focusing on the blue words from Magic Words
